Colossus Scaffolding is an East Sussex scaffolding contractor with a solid reputation built entirely through word of mouth. Before coming to DCS, they had no website at all — not even a basic holding page. Work came in through referrals and repeat customers, which was fine, but it created a ceiling. Larger commercial clients — developers, construction firms, property managers — expect a professional web presence before they'll pick up the phone. Without one, Colossus were invisible to that market.
The Challenge
The team at Colossus were excellent at their trade. The problem was perception. When a commercial client searches for a scaffolding contractor in East Sussex, they're making a judgement call based on what they find online. A well-presented site signals that a company is established, insured, and takes its business seriously. No website signals the opposite, regardless of how good the actual work is.
Beyond winning commercial contracts, there was also the long-term opportunity of organic search traffic. Dozens of people in East Sussex search for scaffolding services every month — "scaffolding contractor Eastbourne", "residential scaffolding Hastings", "scaffold hire East Sussex" — and Colossus weren't appearing for any of them. That was free enquiries going to competitors every single day.
The Solution
I built Colossus a 30-page website on the DCS platform using the Vega theme in navy blue — professional, clean, and well-suited to a trade contractor audience. The site structure was planned from the ground up to serve two goals simultaneously: look credible to potential clients, and rank in Google for the searches that matter.
On the service side, I created dedicated pages for each type of scaffolding they offer: residential scaffolding, commercial scaffolding, new build scaffolding, scaffold hire, and event scaffolding. Each page explains the service, when it's used, and what the process looks like — the kind of content that builds trust before a client has even made contact.
On the location side, I created pages for the main towns and areas across East Sussex where Colossus works: Eastbourne, Hastings, Bexhill, Lewes, Seaford, Hailsham, and several more. Each location page targets the local search terms for that area and links to the relevant services. This is the architecture that makes local SEO work — search engines can see clearly who you are, what you do, and exactly where you do it.
I also set up Google Business Profile, ensured the site had proper Schema.org markup for a local contractor, and submitted the site to Google Search Console on launch day.
The Results
The site went live in September 2024. Within three weeks, Colossus received their first enquiry via the website contact form — a residential customer in Eastbourne who had found them through Google. Not a referral, not a repeat customer. A cold lead, from the internet, for the first time.
Within a few months the site was appearing in Google Maps results for scaffolding searches across East Sussex. The 30-page structure means Colossus now has a foothold for dozens of search terms they simply didn't exist for before.
More significantly, they now have the professional presence needed to pursue larger commercial work. When a developer or property manager looks them up, they find a well-presented site that clearly explains the company's capabilities, service area, and contact details. That's the difference between getting a callback and being passed over.
Colossus Scaffolding are a good example of what a well-built website can do for a trade business that's already delivering quality work — it removes the one barrier stopping clients from finding them.
