Nicola is an 11+ tutor with years of experience preparing students for grammar school entrance exams. Her teaching materials — PowerPoint lessons, practice papers, worked examples — represent a significant investment of time and expertise. Before coming to me, she delivered all of her tuition in person, which worked well until Covid closed that option entirely.
The challenge wasn't just moving online. It was doing so in a way that protected the value of what she'd built.
The Challenge
Nicola had a specific problem that went beyond simply needing a website. Her lesson materials were detailed, high-quality, and took considerable time to produce. If she made them available online without protection, there was nothing to stop a paying student sharing them with others — or putting them on forums where they'd be downloaded for free. The materials could be passed around indefinitely without anyone paying.
At the same time, Covid had created an urgent need. In-person tuition was impossible, students still needed to prepare for exams, and Nicola needed a way to continue teaching and generating income.
The Solution
I built Nicola an online learning platform using LearnPress integrated with WooCommerce. The setup works as follows: students purchase access to lesson content through the WooCommerce checkout, and the purchase unlocks the protected materials in the LearnPress learning management system. Without a purchase, the content isn't accessible.
This architecture solved both problems simultaneously. Students can buy and access materials from anywhere in the country — removing the geographical limitation of in-person tuition. And the paywall means Nicola's intellectual property is protected: content can only be accessed by people who've paid for it, and can't be shared in a way that bypasses the purchase.
The site is straightforward to use for students and parents: browse the available materials, add to cart, pay, and get immediate access. The checkout uses familiar payment options and the whole process takes a couple of minutes.
The Results
The platform went live during a period when Nicola would otherwise have had no viable route to continue her tuition business. Instead of closing, she expanded — moving from a local student base limited by geography to a nationwide reach. Students across the country could now access her materials, and the paywall meant every access was a paid access.
The intellectual property protection proved its value immediately. The lesson materials that previously risked being shared freely are now locked behind a purchase, preserving their value and Nicola's ability to generate income from them.
It's a good example of what the right website architecture can do — not just moving a business online, but solving a specific problem that would otherwise have been a significant obstacle.
